As Valentine’s Day approaches, a day devoted to love, hearing the above, is not good news. Nor is the fact that actually 30 percent of porn addicts are women. This comes from Fight the New Drug, whose motto is the title of this piece, a secular group of young people who describe themselves thus: “passionate and innovative problem-solvers who want to make a difference in the world. Our mission is to raise awareness on the harmful effects of pornography through creative mediums.”

Short you tube videos from FTND (https://www.youtube.com/user/FightTheNewDrug) trace the history of pornography’s invasion and flooding our world via the Internet, using scientific evidence exposing the damaging consequences of porn’s use to individuals, their relationships, and society as a whole. Presented below are excerpts from recent research articles describing pornography’s devastation reported by Billy Hallowell. As increasing numbers of Pregnancy Medical Clinics (PMCs) reach out to both young men and women in their communities, they can encourage sexual risk avoidance, armed with the correct resources and help.

The Bad News Regarding Pornography:

1) “A Meta-Analysis of Pornography Consumption and Actual Acts of Sexual Aggression in General Population Studies,” with results, published in an article in the Journal of Communication, is certain to add to the debate over the negative impact of porn. [i] The article’s abstract reads:

22 studies from 7 different countries were analyzed. Consumption was associated with sexual aggression in the United States and internationally, among males and females, and in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Associations were stronger for verbal than physical sexual aggression, although both were significant. The general pattern of results suggested that violent content may be an exacerbating factor.”

2) Warnings continue to emerge from experts and faith leaders about the potentially negative impact of pornography, with a psychologist recently telling VICE that the portion of the brain used to make decisions based on morals and values can essentially shut off when a person views smut.[ii]

When you’re in a sexual arousal process where you’re looking at pornography, you’re activating limbic parts of the brain,” said Dr. David Greenfield, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and director of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction.

Greenfield told VICE that the prefrontal cortex — the area where personal decisions are made in light of morals and values — is essentially cut off during viewing, with the desire to see porn so strong that it supersedes any feelings or cautions someone might have that would potentially hold them back from partaking.

3) Famed psychologist Philip Zimbardo is claiming that young men’s brains are becoming “digitally rewired” due to excess video game and porn consumption — a social “crisis” that he believes parents and the public must address.[iii]

Zimbardo, the former president of the American Psychological Association, describes results he observed after surveying 20,000 young people, the majority of whom were young men. “It’s a new kind of addiction.”

Zimbardo is hardly the first expert to warn about porn consumption, as doctors and faith leaders have been sounding the alarm for quite some time. Earlier this year, Dr. David Greenfield, a psychologist, told VICE that the portion of the brain used to make decisions based on morals and values can essentially shut off when a person views smut.
